Rik Medlik Memorial Lecture
The Development of Tourism: Past, Present & Future
Rik Medlik was the first Chair of the Society (1977-80) and was one of the key instigators behind its creation. He sadly passed away on Saturday 30 June 2007 at the age of 79. Rik lobbied for and, as head of the new department, put in place the first degree programme in Hotel and Catering Administration when Battersea College of Technology became the University of Surrey in 1966. The influence of this on the University of Surrey and indeed on higher education in the UK and across the world has been considerable. He later led the development of the first degree programme in tourism.
This lecture has been organized in memory of Rik with presentations on his contributions to tourism education and the industry and how they have evolved since Rik started his career 50 years ago; Bernard Donoghue will provide a ‘look to the future' for the British tourism industry.
This event will be of significant interest to anyone working in the British tourism industry or in tourism education.
